Forensic science and medicine provide not only scientific evidence in judicial proceedings, but also professional support in the areas of state administration and public safety. Given that forensic science and medicine play such an important role in society in the 21 st century, it is time to launch a new journal in China: Journal of Forensic Science and Medicine.

Forensic science and medicine in China have distinct characteristics. Forensic scientists in the country have accumulated rich experience from forensic science caseworks because of the enormous amount and extensive variety of their cases. The disciplines of forensic science and medicine are also closely related to legal issues in China. Furthermore, the teaching of forensic medicine in higher education institutions is unique, with forensic medicine disciplines being offered to undergraduate students in over 30 universities. Forensic science research not only increases our understanding of the scientific foundations of forensic principles but also highlights the current applications of technology. Moreover, the maturity of the forensic science and medicine fields in China suggests that sufficient high quality content is being generated to support a dedicated journal.

However, these are not the only reasons for creating a new journal. Another important factor is that many of the papers submitted to Chinese journals on the topics of forensic science and medicine might not attract the attention of people working in other countries around the world who find the Chinese language too difficult to read. This new journal bridges this gap between China and the rest of the world by providing an international forum for the publication of original articles, reviews, case reports, brief communications, commentaries, and editorials that cover both practical and theoretical areas of interest relating to the wide range of forensic science and medicine. This will encourage forensic scientists in China and abroad to exchange experience, work on quality control, and cooperate to share scientific knowledge and findings in the fields of interest and to develop educational opportunities in forensic science and medicine in China and abroad.

Several years ago, the Institute of Evidence Law and Forensic Science, China University of Political Science and Law, in partnership with the Innovation Center of Judicial Civilization in China started to contact scientific publishers with the proposal to launch a new journal, solely dedicated to the scientific advancement of forensic science and medicine. I am, therefore, delighted that this project has now been brought to life with Medknow Publications, a strong partner in this field. Medknow, part of Wolters Kluwer Health, is one of the largest open access publishers worldwide, with more than 300 medical journals in its portfolio. Globally, students, researchers, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals access Medknow journals to help them fuel new discoveries and improve healthcare. Sharing with the scientific community our hope and motivation at this exciting moment is an important step for this field, and we strongly believe that it represents a positive outcome both for forensic science and medicine and for our journal. The editors and the editorial board are optimistic that our new journal will grow rapidly into a generally accepted scientific forum in forensic science and medicine. We invite every scientist with interest in this field to join our effort and contribute to the success of this new journal.
